What is functional medicine?
Functional or Integrative Medicine is a whole-person approach to health and wellbeing. It focuses on finding and addressing the cause of health problems, rather than treating symptoms alone.
It combines both traditional NHS GP practices with personalised medicine, creating a focus on prevention of diseases and their symptoms through nutrition, therapeutic diet and exercise, use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques, prescribed combinations of drugs and/or other medicines, supplements, detoxification programs, and stress-management techniques.
Why choose functional medicine?
Our society is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of people who suffer from complex, chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, as well as autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid disease. Dr Jenni is also seeing more people who describe ongoing gut/bowel issues or problems caused by hormones.
Many others are suffering from anxiety, depression, lack of energy, muscle, nerve and joint pain, and chronic fatigue on a daily basis.
- Does this sound like you?
Confused, frustrated and having had no success in resolving these health problems via the conventional medical route, many people are reluctantly accepting these symptoms and the drugs that come with them as their new normal. This is saddening and unnecessary.
The conventional system of medicine practiced by most doctors is oriented toward acute care – the diagnosis and treatment of short-term, urgent traumas or illnesses. Doctors apply specific, prescribed treatments such as drugs or surgery, which aim to treat the immediate problem or symptom.
The shortcoming of this system is that it often results in a lack of proper methodology, time and tools to prevent and treat complex, chronic diseases and those feelings of an overall lack of vitality – both of which can have a very detrimental effect on your quality of life.
Deeply science based, Dr Jenni uses Functional Medicine to consider and explore the complex interactions in your life history, physiology, genes and lifestyle that can lead to illness. Instead of asking, “Which drug matches up with this problem?” Functional Medicine asks: “Why do you have this problem in the first place?”, “Why has health and vitality been lost?” and “What can we do to restore it?”
It is important for us to remember that health is not simply the absence of sickness. Health is a manifestation of physical, mental and emotional energy and vitality, every single day.

What to expect
During your initial consultation, Dr Jenni will follow a structured process to uncover the significant events in your life, gaining a better understanding of who you are as an individual and what may have triggered any health issues that you have experienced.
She will review your medical history in detail, engaging you in open and collaborative conversation, respecting your role as the patient and your knowledge. It is important that you are an empowered, informed, equal partner in your own personalised journey to optimum health.
Dr Jenni will use a variety of tools to set you on the path to improved health, which may not be pharmaceutical led. Diagnostic tests (which may include blood tests, saliva samples, stool samples, urine samples and other laboratory investigations as appropriate) form a large part of functional medicine and root cause diagnosis, and during your consultation, Dr Jenni will discuss the tests that she thinks are most suitable for you.
She will also design a unique treatment plan, which may include a range of healing modalities, such as diet and nutrition; exercise and movement; stress management; sleep and rest and nutritional and pharmaceutical supplementation, and she may also make recommendations for various other restorative and reparative therapies. She will work to ensure that you fully understand what is being treated, why and how, every step of the way.
Dr Jenni will work with you for as long as you choose, to return you to better health, even if you have experienced years of health problems. She will support and guide you to a healthier lifestyle and towards the most appropriate medical interventions, diagnosing and treating your particular health concerns to help you look great, feel great and live better.
