Why Adult ADHD Assessments Must Remain Accessible, Especially Now

When the System Says “Wait”, But You Can’t

Here at The Dr Jenni Clinic in Blisworth, just outside Northampton, we’ve been following the recent developments in ADHD services with growing concern. As of 21 May, Coventry and Warwickshire’s NHS Integrated Care Board has paused all new ADHD referrals for adults over 25.

Yes, you read that right…if you’re 26 or older and suspect you have ADHD, the door to NHS support in this region is temporarily closed.

We completely understand the immense pressure on NHS mental health services, especially post-pandemic. But pausing referrals based purely on age sends a troubling message: that adult ADHD is somehow less valid, less urgent, or worse, less real.

And that couldn’t be further from the truth.

ADHD Doesn’t Stop at 25

ADHD is a lifelong condition. It doesn’t switch off once you hit your mid-twenties. In fact, many people don’t even realise they have ADHD until adulthood, often after years of feeling “different” or being misdiagnosed with anxiety, depression, or just labelled as forgetful or disorganised.

This is especially true for women, who are more likely to mask symptoms and go undiagnosed well into adulthood.

To pause referrals at this critical point in someone’s life isn’t just unfair: it’s potentially dangerous.

The Human Cost of Being Left in the Dark

Without a formal diagnosis, many adults are left struggling in silence. ADHD UK reports that 1 in 10 men and boys, and 1 in 4 women and girls with ADHD will attempt to take their own life.

Let that sink in.

Delays in diagnosis mean delays in accessing support, medication, workplace accommodations, and therapy. That’s not just frustrating, it can be life-altering. Or even life-threatening.

We’re Here to Support You, No Matter Your Age

At The Dr Jenni Clinic, we believe everyone deserves access to answers, at any age. That’s why we offer private ADHD assessments for adults in Northamptonshire and surrounding areas, including Warwickshire, Coventry, and Milton Keynes.

Whether you prefer a face-to-face appointment at our welcoming Blisworth clinic or an online consultation from the comfort of your home, we’ve created a clear, supportive path toward diagnosis and treatment.

We know private healthcare isn’t accessible to everyone, and it shouldn’t have to be. But right now, while public services are paused, it can offer a crucial lifeline for those who can’t afford to wait.

What Needs to Change. Now.

We stand firmly with organisations like ADHD UK in calling for:

  • Immediate reinstatement of NHS ADHD referrals for adults over 25
  • Proper investment in adult ADHD services across England
  • Training for healthcare professionals to recognise ADHD at all ages
  • Better use of the NHS “Right to Choose” scheme, giving patients access to accredited independent providers

Because ADHD doesn’t discriminate by age, and neither should our healthcare system.
