Your cleanser hasn’t changed. Neither has your moisturiser. Yet suddenly, your skin feels tight after washing, your makeup sits differently, and a product you’ve used happily for months seems to sting.
Perhaps you’re noticing dry patches around your mouth, more redness across your cheeks or a face that feels uncomfortable by the end of the day.
It can be frustrating, especially when you’re already investing time and money in looking after your skin.
As autumn settles in, it may be time to reconsider what your skin needs.
When your usual routine stops feeling right
The transition into colder weather brings changes to our surroundings and our habits. We move between chilly outdoor air and heated rooms, spend more time indoors and turn up the temperature of our showers.
You may notice that your skin feels different during this transition. Something that felt comfortable in summer can suddenly seem insufficient, or harder to tolerate.
The temptation is often to add something: a richer cream, a hydrating serum, an exfoliating treatment to tackle the roughness.
Before long, you can have several new products in the bathroom and very little idea of which one is helping.
Dry, dehydrated or irritated?
We often use “dry” to describe any skin that feels uncomfortable. But tightness, flaking, sensitivity and rough texture don’t necessarily tell the same story.
You might describe your skin as dry while still experiencing an oily forehead or breakouts. You may feel tightness without obvious flaking. Or your main concern might be that almost everything you apply seems to sting.
Those differences matter when choosing what to do next.
A product recommended for someone else’s dry skin may not suit yours. Even a beautifully packaged product with excellent reviews can be the wrong fit for your skin and your existing routine.
The urge to scrub away the problem
When skin looks dull or feels uneven, it’s understandable to want to smooth it out.
That might mean reaching for an exfoliating acid, using a scrub more often or adding another “renewing” product. But when your skin is already uncomfortable, doing more can make it harder to work out what it needs.
There can also be overlap between products that isn’t obvious from their names. Your cleanser, toner, serum and night cream may each contain ingredients intended to exfoliate or encourage renewal.
Individually, they may sound sensible. Together, the routine can become more complicated than you intended.
Sometimes the most useful question is simply: what am I asking my skin to tolerate?
Midlife can add another layer
If your skin has become less predictable in your 40s or 50s, you may be wondering whether hormones are involved.
Perhaps you’re noticing changes in comfort and texture alongside other midlife symptoms. Perhaps products you once relied on no longer feel right, and you’re unsure whether to change your routine or persist.
These are useful things to discuss in a consultation. We want to understand what has changed for you, rather than assume that every new skin concern has the same explanation.
Your skin deserves an individual approach.
Why a bespoke consultation can help
At The Dr Jenni Clinic, our bespoke skin consultations give us time to look at your concerns, understand your current routine and discuss what you would like to improve.
It helps to know what you’re using, including the products you only reach for occasionally—and how your skin feels after applying them.
We can then consider appropriate skincare and whether a clinic treatment has a useful role. The aim is to give you a clear, manageable plan, with recommendations that make sense for your skin, your preferences and your everyday life.
You don’t need to arrive knowing whether you have “sensitive skin” or which ingredient is causing the problem. That uncertainty is a perfectly good reason to book.
A conversation we’ll be having at Skin Club
For members of The Wellness Prescription®, our quarterly Skin Club offers another opportunity to learn more about skin health, ask questions and explore concerns such as seasonal changes.
It’s a chance to make sense of the advice we’re surrounded by, in a welcoming space where you can ask the questions you might otherwise keep to yourself.
Skin Club is included in your membership, alongside 10% off clinic skincare while your membership remains active. For advice tailored specifically to your skin, a bespoke consultation gives us space to focus on you.
You don’t have to keep guessing
Persistent redness, soreness or irritation deserves attention, particularly if it’s worsening or affecting your comfort.
And even when the problem seems small, you don’t have to spend another season buying products and hoping the next one will be the answer.
If your skin feels different this autumn, let’s take a closer look at what it needs.
