What Is A Shave Excision?
A shave excision is a minor surgical procedure used to remove raised benign moles and superficial skin lesions from the surface of the skin.
After the area has been numbed with local anaesthetic, a sterile surgical blade is used to carefully remove the lesion, leaving a flat wound that heals naturally over time.
The procedure is quick, does not usually require stitches, and can be an excellent option for carefully selected raised lesions.

Your Journey Starts With A Mole & Skin Lesion Check
All patients are required to attend a Mole & Skin Lesion Check Consultation before any removal procedure.
During this appointment, your doctor will carefully assess the lesion(s) you are concerned about, whether this is a mole, cyst, skin tag or another skin lesion. We will discuss your concerns, examine the area thoroughly, explain the available treatment options and advise whether removal is appropriate.
You will receive a personalised treatment plan, including recommended removal methods, expected outcomes, aftercare advice and a clear quotation for treatment. Where removal is not appropriate, we will discuss alternative options, monitoring or referral if required.
In some cases, small lesions may be suitable for removal during the same appointment, although this cannot be guaranteed and will depend on the nature of the lesion, the time available and your doctor’s clinical assessment.
This allows us to:
- Assess the lesion carefully
- Determine whether it appears suitable for shave excision
- Discuss alternative treatment options where appropriate
- Explain the risks and benefits of treatment
- Decide whether histological analysis may be required

What Happens During a Shave Excision Procedure?
Once the area has been numbed with local anaesthetic, the lesion is carefully removed using a sterile surgical blade.
The procedure itself usually takes only a few minutes.
A dressing will be applied and you will receive full aftercare advice before leaving the clinic.
Healing & Recovery
Most patients heal very well following shave excision.
You can generally expect:
Days 1–7
- Mild redness and tenderness
- Formation of a small protective scab
- Some itching during healing
Weeks 2–4
- The scab gradually loosens and falls away
- New pink skin appears underneath
- The area continues to settle
Months 1–12
- Redness gradually fades
- The skin continues to remodel
- Any scar typically softens and becomes less noticeable over time
As with any skin procedure, there is a possibility of:
- Scarring
- Pigment changes
- Infection
- Delayed healing
- Regrowth of the lesion
