A Simple, Effective Option for Raised Moles and Benign Skin Lesions

Many people live with moles or skin lesions that catch on clothing, become irritated, affect confidence, or are simply becoming more noticeable over time.

At The Dr Jenni Clinic, we now offer doctor-led shave excision removal for carefully selected benign raised moles and skin lesions.

The procedure itself is usually very quick, straightforward and well tolerated, but understandably, one of the biggest questions patients ask is:

“What will it look like afterwards and how does it heal?”

This guide explains what shave excision is, who it may be suitable for, and what you can realistically expect during the healing process.

What Is Shave Excision?

Shave excision is a minor surgical procedure used to remove raised moles or superficial benign skin lesions from the surface of the skin.

After carefully numbing the area with local anaesthetic, a sterile surgical blade is used to gently remove the lesion flush to the skin surface.

Unlike deeper surgical excision:

  • stitches are not required
  • the procedure is quick
  • healing is often faster
  • and scarring is often minimal for suitable lesions

The area then heals naturally over the following weeks.

What Types of Lesions Can Be Removed?

Shave excision may be suitable for:

  • raised benign moles
  • skin tags
  • large seborrhoeic keratoses
  • superficial benign skin lesions
  • lesions that catch on clothing or jewellery
  • cosmetic concerns

Importantly, not every mole or lesion is suitable for shave removal.

At your moor check & pre-op consultation, we carefully assess:

  • appearance
  • location
  • size
  • skin type
  • whether further investigation or histology may be appropriate

Patient safety always comes first.

Why Do Patients Choose Shave Removal?

Many patients choose shave excision because it is:

  • quick
  • minimally invasive
  • performed under local anaesthetic
  • associated with relatively straightforward healing

For many raised lesions, it can also provide a very good cosmetic outcome.

What Happens During Healing?

Healing after shave excision happens gradually in stages.

Every person heals slightly differently depending on:

  • skin type
  • lesion location
  • aftercare
  • individual healing tendencies

but most people heal very well.

Days 1–3

The area may look:

  • pink or red
  • slightly raw
  • similar to a superficial graze

A small amount of bleeding or oozing initially can be normal. A dressing may be applied depending on the location.

The area can feel:

  • mildly tender
  • tight
  • slightly sensitive once the anaesthetic wears off

First Week

A protective scab or crust usually forms.

This is a normal and important part of healing.

You may notice:

  • mild redness
  • itching
  • slight sensitivity

The most important thing during this stage is:

do not pick the scab.

Keeping the area clean and protected helps reduce irritation and supports better healing.

Weeks 2–4

The scab gradually loosens and falls away naturally.

Underneath, new pink skin appears.

At this stage:

  • the skin may still look pink
  • it may feel slightly sensitive
  • the area often continues improving week by week

Many of our patients are pleasantly surprised by how quickly the area settles.

Longer-Term Healing

Over the following months:

  • redness gradually fades
  • the skin softens
  • the area blends more naturally with surrounding skin

All skin procedures carry some possibility of scarring, pigmentation change or regrowth, and results vary from person to person.

For many patients though, the final result becomes progressively less noticeable over time.

How To Care For The Area Afterwards

We provide full aftercare advice following your procedure, but general advice usually includes:

  • keeping the area clean
  • avoiding picking or scratching
  • avoiding excessive sun exposure
  • using SPF once healed
  • allowing the area to heal naturally

In some cases we may also advise:

  • moisturisers
  • silicone scar products
  • or additional aftercare support if needed

Will The Mole Grow Back?

Because shave excision removes the lesion at skin level rather than cutting deeply beneath the skin, there is a possibility of partial regrowth in some cases.

This does not necessarily mean anything dangerous, but if a lesion changes, returns unusually, or causes concern, it should always be reviewed.

Some lesions are better suited to full surgical excision depending on:

  • depth
  • appearance
  • location
  • clinical suspicion

We will always discuss the most appropriate option with you.

A Thoughtful, Doctor-Led Approach

At The Dr Jenni Clinic, we understand that even “small” skin concerns can affect:

  • confidence
  • comfort
  • self-consciousness
  • or simply how you feel in your own skin

Our approach is calm, thorough and patient-centred.

We take time to:

  • assess lesions carefully
  • discuss realistic expectations
  • explain healing properly
  • and support you through the process from consultation to aftercare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does shave excision hurt?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so the area is numbed beforehand. Most patients tolerate it very well.

Will I have a scar?

Any skin procedure can leave a mark or scar, although shave excision is often chosen because it can heal very well for suitable lesions.

How long does healing take?

Initial healing often occurs within a few weeks, although the skin continues settling and fading over several months.

Can all moles be removed this way?

No. Some lesions require alternative approaches or further investigation. Suitability is assessed during consultation.

Do you send lesions for testing?

Where clinically appropriate, lesions may be sent for histological analysis. This will be discussed during your appointment.
